China Energy Engineering Group Co. (CEEC) plans to invest $1 billion over the next five years in Egypt, focusing on seawater desalination, renewable energy, and energy storage.
The announcement came during a meeting on Sunday between Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly and the company’s Chairman and General Manager, Ni Zhen, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Plus Summit in Tianjin, China, to discuss expanding cooperation in these sectors.
Madbouly highlighted Egypt’s ambition to increase water desalination production from 1.4 million cubic metres per day to 10 million within five years, with a longer-term goal of reaching 30 million cubic metres per day, stressing the importance of localising plant components.
Ni Zhen noted that CEEC has implemented 14 projects in Egypt since 2009 and relocated its regional headquarters to Cairo, signalling strong confidence in the Egyptian market. He also confirmed ongoing consultations with Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy to explore joint power generation projects and the localisation of related technology in the country.
Prime Minister Madbouly praised CEEC as a leading investor in Egypt and emphasised the government’s target of producing 42 per cent of energy from renewable sources by 2030, alongside energy storage initiatives. He underlined Egypt’s growing energy demand of 5–6 gigawatts annually, in addition to plans for exporting electricity to Europe. He expressed the government’s readiness to provide necessary incentives and facilitate project implementation.
CEEC affirmed its commitment to cooperate with Egypt in energy production, storage, and water desalination, mirroring its operations in other countries worldwide.
