China eyes carbon footprint system launch by ’27
China plans to establish an initial carbon footprint management system by 2027 to move towards its carbon-neutral goal, Reuters reported on Wednesday citing a statement by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment.
The system will include carbon footprint calculation standards for about 100 major products by 2027, increasing to 200 by 2030. Priority products include coal, steel, natural gas, aluminium, lithium batteries, and new energy vehicles.
China aims to expand carbon trading to sectors such as steel and cement and address the impact of Europe’s carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM).
Last week, China released a plan to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 1 per cent of the 2023 national total through efficiency improvements.
