China imposes sanctions on US arms suppliers to Taiwan
China announced sanctions on US companies selling arms to “Taiwan”, which Beijing claims as its own territory, according to a Chinese state media, citing the Foreign Ministry.
While the specific companies targeted by the sanctions were not disclosed, it is known that Taiwan is awaiting deliveries of F-16 fighter jets, Abrams tanks, and a variety of missiles from the United States.
China escalated its threats against Taiwan, a country with 2.3 million citizens who strongly support their de-facto independence. Despite no formal diplomatic relations, the US has been a major arms supplier and is obligated to help Taiwan defend itself.
Taiwan is bolstering its defence capabilities by purchasing weapons from the US and revitalising its domestic arms industry. The country is developing a fleet of submarines and has extended mandatory military service for men to one year.
