China to boost development in western provinces
China announced on Sunday a plan to implement 15 new measures aimed at advancing the development of its western provinces. The initiative focuses on enhancing logistical infrastructure, including the construction of ports and aviation hubs.
According to the General Administration of Customs, the measures will improve the integration of transport networks across rail, air, river, and sea routes in western China, as reported by state media.
Key aspects of the plan include the expansion of international aviation hubs in major cities such as Chengdu, Chongqing, Kunming, Xi’an, and Urumqi. Additionally, comprehensive bonded zones will be developed and integrated with existing ports and other transportation links. The initiative also includes the construction and expansion of several ports.
For years, China has aimed to boost the economic vitality of its western regions, which have lagged behind the more prosperous coastal provinces. However, the region has also faced challenges, including ethnic tensions in areas like Xinjiang and stringent security measures. Beijing argues these measures are essential for maintaining national unity and ensuring border stability, though they have faced criticism from some Western countries.
