China’s youth unemployment rate fell to 15.7 per cent in December from 16.1 per cent in November, marking the fourth consecutive monthly decline from a peak of 18.8 per cent in August 2023.
The unemployment rate for 25-29-year-olds also dipped slightly. However, the jobless rate for those aged 30-59 edged upward. The nationwide unemployment rate stood at 5.1 per cent in December.
The data for youth unemployment was suspended for several months in 2023 after reaching a record 21.3 per cent in June. The National Bureau of Statistics resumed publishing the data in December after revising the methodology to exclude students.
