Cisco Systems Inc. said it would acquire ContainerX Inc., an 18-month-old startup that runs software containers for corporate customers.
Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. ContainerX had raised $2.7 million from General Catalyst Partners and Greylock Partners.
Containers provide a way to package and manage software applications so they can run across different data centers and clouds, and be scaled up and down as needed. They are an alternative to virtual machines and are regarded as more flexible than virtual machines in some ways.
