Consortium builds new solar farm in Kosovo

Solar Energy Group Europe (SEGE) consortium will start building a 150-megawatt (MW) solar farm in Western Kosovo, announced on  Saturday.

Consortium stated the farm’s production is expected to exceed 243,000 megawatt hours every year. The construction and engineering of the plant will be carried out by the German Siemens Energy.

Kosovo currently depends on coal for more than 90 percent of its domestic production. Furthermore, the country’s coal-fired power plants are among the most polluting plants in Europe, since they deploy old technologies.

Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti said the country is working on “paving the road for a more… environmentally friendly future” through “harnessing the potential of clean energy.”

The current administration has also declared its commitment to end using coal by 2050.
