Court Adjourns Khaled Said Retrial Until 6 January

Alexandria’s criminal court adjourned Wednesday the retrial of two policemen over the killing of Khaled Said until 6 January, upon a request from the defendants’ lawyer, Egypt’s state news agency MENA reported.

The defendants’ lawyer submitted the request because he could not make his plea for medical reasons and to summon witnesses.

The lawyer representing Said’s family, Mohamed el-Bakry, demanded Wednesday that the charges against the two defendants be changed from “beating that caused death” to “murder.”

The killing of Khaled Said in June 2010 by police in Alexandria helped trigger the popular uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak in February 2011. Khaled was reportedly beaten to death by two policemen because he possessed video footage of policemen sharing the spoils of a drug bust

In October 2012, the two policemen were sentenced to seven years in jail for the illegal imprisonment and torture of Said. Both prosecution and defence appealed the original sentence.
