South Cairo Criminal Court has frozen the assets of Mubarak-era parliamentary speaker Fathi Sorour and 24 members of his family.
Investigators said Sorour’s wealth was out of proportion to his legitimate sources of income, raising suspicions of illicit gains.
The Illicit Gains Authority (IGA) requested the order, which was made on Sunday.
Fathi Sorour was a heavyweight of the Mubarak era. He served as parliamentary speaker from 1990 until the revolution of January 2011. He also served as education minister.
He was released from prison without bail on 23 October 2012 after an appeal court ruled that corruption accusations against him were not serious enough to keep him in detention.
