Court sentences 15 Morsi supporters to 25 years on 2013 violence charges

A Cairo criminal court sentenced 15 defendants to 25 years in prison in the trial of the so-called “Maspero 2 clashes” that took place in July 2013 following Islamist President Mohamed Morsi’s ouster.

The court also sentenced three defendants to 15 years and five defendants to 10 years in prison.

The defendants can still appeal the sentence.

On 5 July 2013, two days following Morsi’s ouster, clashes broke out between opponents and supporters of the former president in the Maspero area near Cairo’s Tahrir Square.

The clashes, which were dispersed by police, resulted in the death of three people and the injury of 199 others.

The prosecution charged 23 defendants – 17 in custody and six fugitives – with rioting, premeditated murder, using force, assaulting public and private facilities and citizens, and disturbing public peace.
