A court in Cairo has sentenced Hamdeen Sabbahi’s daughter to three years in jail for fraud, judicial sources said on Tuesday.
Salma Sabbahi was convicted and fined LE1,000 in absentia on charges related to a swindle at a network marketing firm. She denied the accusations.
She was earlier released on bail of LE30,000.
The accusations were first made by independent individuals in May.
She was prosecuted along with seven others.
Her father, Nasserist politician Hamdeen Sabbahi, came third in last year’s presidential election behind eventual winner Mohamed Morsi, and Mubarak-era prime minister Ahmed Shafiq.
He is the founder of the left-leaning Popular Current party.
Salma Sabbahi, who worked as a TV presenter, says the allegations are part of a libel campaign against her father.
