Egypt’s Housing Minister Mostafa Madbouly has issued a decision removing the headquarters of the disbanded National Democratic Party, located in Tahrir Square, from the list of protected antiquities.
The building was included in the list in 2009. In April, the Cabinet decided to demolish the building and ordered the Cairo governorate administration to begin the necessary procedures.
The NDP headquarters, overlooking the Nile, were partially destroyed during the January 2011 uprising, serving as a powerful symbol of the revolution. The NDP, which had been a dpminant force in Egyptian politics since it was founded by Anwar Sadat in 1978. was dissolved by a court order in April 2011.
