One detainee died due to teargas inhalation and 17 others were injured during an escape attempt at a police station in Giza on Saturday, an interior ministry spokesman said.
In a statement issued on the official Facebook page of the ministry, Abu Bakr Abdel-Karim said that the defendants took advantage of a fight inside a cell in Al-Hawamdeya police station to break through an internal door.
They then ran to the outer entrance of the police station, in an attempt to break open the main doors. Police began to deploy teargas, which foiled the attempt.
Respiratory problems caused by the teargas led to the death of one man and the injury of 17 others.
According to the statement, the incident has been referred to the general prosecution for investigations.
