Egypt has accredited the first X-RAY laboratory in the country, Africa, and the Middle East for testing and analysing gold, the supply ministry said on Wednesday.
The laboratory, operated by the Assay and Weights Administration, has been officially accredited by the Egyptian National Accreditation Council (EGAC) and the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC). It is designed to examine gold, analyse jewelry, determine purity, ensure compliance with legal standards, and control quality.
“This accreditation represents a major leap in Egypt’s gold testing and analysis system and reflects significant upgrades in our technical and infrastructural capabilities,” said Hamdy El-Hamahmy, head of the Administration.
The lab will also analyse delicate samples that might otherwise be damaged during conventional testing, and aims to strengthen confidence in the Egyptian gold market while ensuring high-quality products for consumers, the statement added.
The move is part of broader efforts led by Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Sherif Farouk to modernise technical laboratories, raise institutional efficiency, and align Egypt’s systems with international standards.
