Egypt advances Edfu sugarcane seedling station

Egypt’s Minister of Agriculture Alaa Farouk has held a meeting with senior officials from Al Wataneya Company for General Contracting and Supplies to follow up on the implementation of the sugarcane seedling station in Edfu, Aswan, according to a Cabinet statement.

The company presented the construction and operational progress of the station, including its trial operation status, along with requirements for full operation, as stated in the statement.

Farouk stressed the need to complete the project within the set timeline, noting that execution has exceeded 90 per cent, with construction works, 12 integrated greenhouses, hangars have been completed and tractors delivered.

The minister underscored the importance of ensuring successful and sustainable operations for the sugarcane seedling stations to maintain long-term efficiency, according to the Cabinet’s statement.

He highlighted that the project is a key addition to Egypt’s food security efforts, particularly in sugar production, as it will significantly boost sugarcane yields and help reduce the import gap, the report added.

Farouk instructed that urgent coordination meetings be held with all authorities concerned and ministries to secure the station’s operational needs and ensure sustainable, high-efficiency performance.

He also stressed the importance of cooperating with the private sector and farmers to maximise the benefits of this plant, which has been equipped with the latest agricultural technologies to serve as a model in this field.
