Egypt advances National Adaptation Plan to tackle climate change

Egypt’s Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad held a meeting on Thursday with the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) team to review the latest progress on drafting the country’s climate resilience strategy, as per a Cabinet statement.

Fouad highlighted that the plan will support decision-makers in prioritising adaptation efforts by forecasting climate change impacts up to 2100. A team of consultants is working on six key sectors, including public health, groundwater, biodiversity, desertification, and coastal areas.

Assistant Resident Representative at the UNDP Mohamed Bayoumi confirmed that work is underway on an interactive climate adaptation map, set for release next year. The initiative builds on the NAP project’s findings and involves collaboration with various ministries.

The adaptation strategy includes sector-specific risk assessments, focusing on agriculture, water, and urban mobility.

Using climate impact projections—such as rising temperatures, increased wind speeds, and heavier rainfall—the team is calculating vulnerabilities and potential damages across Egypt’s governorates. The plan will also integrate existing initiatives like the ENACT nature-based solutions programme.
