Egypt aims to expand private role in electricity under sector reforms

Egypt’s Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Mahmoud Esmat held talks with Egyptian Electricity Holding Company Chairman Jaber Desouki and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company head Mona Rizk to follow up on implementation measures for restructuring the power sector.

The meeting discussed separating operations, resolving overlaps and coordinating energy exchange between companies as part of a plan to restructure the holding company and its production and distribution subsidiaries, alongside the transmission operator.

Esmat stressed the importance of regular progress reports to address challenges during implementation, ensure electricity supply sustainability, and create space for private investment in generation and distribution under the Electricity Law.

He said the ministry is committed to expanding private sector participation, while the transmission company will remain the sole operator of the national grid, responsible for managing, maintaining and expanding the network and facilitating power trading and regional interconnections, in line with Egypt’s strategy to become a regional energy.
