Egypt approves EGP 2.1m in aid for informal workers across 26 governorates

Egypt’s ministry of labour on Tuesday approved 2.103 million Egyptian pounds in health, social, and accident-related support for 553 informal workers across 26 governorates, the ministry said.

The funds aim to assist vulnerable groups and expand social protection networks, in line with directives from President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

The ministry said the allocations include:

  • 796,000 pounds for social care, covering marriage, childbirth, death of first-degree relatives, and surgical procedures, benefiting 323 workers.
  • 212,535 pounds for healthcare services, including medical checkups, X-rays, lab tests, and medication for 223 workers.
  • 1.095 million pounds for accident response, covering two incidents: 840,000 pounds for four fatalities and two injuries in a chimney collapse at a brick factory in Giza (200,000 pounds per deceased worker’s family and 20,000 pounds per injured worker), and 255,000 pounds for a fatal road accident across the regional route in Monufia Governorate.

Labour Minister Mohamed Gobran emphasised the government’s commitment to supporting informal workers nationwide, saying the initiative reflects ongoing efforts to expand social protection and ensure a “dignified and safe life for every worker contributing to the nation’s development.”
