Egypt’s Cabinet approved on Wednesday a cooperation protocol between the ministry of communications and the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) to implement the presidential initiative for electronics design and manufacturing, known as Egypt Makes Electronics (EME).
The new protocol extends a previous agreement signed in July 2016 and allows both parties to work on the strategic plan to develop Egypt’s electronics sector. Under the agreement, the Ministry delegates authority to ITIDA to prepare and execute programmes under the EME initiative, aiming to make the sector a central driver of economic growth, double exports, reduce imports of electronic and electrical devices, generate hundreds of thousands of jobs, and attract foreign and joint investments.
Launched by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in December 2015, the initiative seeks to advance electronics design and manufacturing, boost export revenues, and create employment opportunities for youth.
Since its inception, EME has recorded notable growth, including rising exports, a growing pool of electronics design professionals, the establishment of new local companies, branches of international firms, and the launch of factories in Egypt producing mobile phones, tablets, and fiber-optic cables for the first time.
