The Egyptian Cabinet’s Media Centre on Wednesday sought to calm reports of shortages in subsidised food as it began distributing an additional 400-pound monthly food subsidy to ration cardholders.
According to the Ministry of Supply, the essential staples, including sugar, cooking oil, rice, and pasta, are available across consumer complexes, ration shops, and Gameity (My Association) outlets nationwide. Strategic reserves are sufficient for several months, the ministry of Supply said, and authorities are intensifying inspections to enforce pricing rules and prevent hoarding.
The government has extended distribution hours to midnight and allowed beneficiaries to split the grant into up to four instalments during the month. Retailers’ reimbursement rates will also rise from 30 per cent to 50 per cent starting 1 April to ensure continuous supply.
“The measures are designed to make sure all citizens can access their full entitlements without delays or shortages,” the Cabinet’s Media Centre said. The March grant began distribution in February and will continue throughout the month, with the April grant set to be available for the entire month, the statement added.
The move reflects the government’s effort to maintain stability in Egypt’s subsidised food system while managing rising commodity costs and public expectations.
