Egypt, Bulgaria advance preparations for economic cooperation committee meeting

Egypt and Bulgaria held talks in Cairo on Tuesday to prepare for the second session of the Egyptian-Bulgarian Committee for Economic Cooperation, aimed at strengthening trade and investment ties between the two countries.

Investment and Foreign Trade Minister Hassan El-Khatib met with Bulgaria’s Ambassador Dian Katrachev and Trade Counsellor Vladislav Ropev to review bilateral cooperation ahead of the committee meetings scheduled for 2-4 Dec. in Cairo.

The discussions also covered arrangements for a separate meeting between El-Khatib and Bulgaria’s Minister of Economy and Industry during his visit to Egypt from 30 Nov. to 5 Dec. for the EDEX 2025 defence exhibition.

El-Khatib reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to its longstanding relationship with Bulgaria and highlighted priority sectors for expanded cooperation, including electric vehicles, information technology, and digital transformation. He also noted recent measures by the ministry, in coordination with state bodies, that have cut trade and investment barriers by 65 per cent, with a goal of reaching nearly 90 per cent in the near term.

Ambassador Katrachev underscored the depth of Egypt-Bulgaria relations and said Bulgarian firms, both existing and new entrants, are seeking to broaden their presence in priority sectors. He added that 26 Bulgarian companies are expected to participate in the upcoming committee session to explore investment opportunities in Egypt.
