The newly-elected chair of the UN Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (UNINC), Ramy Youssef, outlined four tax policy priorities to promote transparency, equality, and global tax justice, stressing the UNINC’s commitment to these objectives, as per a statement by the Ministry.
Youssef, Egypt’s Assistant Finance Minister for policies and tax development, highlighted the need for a collaborative effort to build a binding framework with clear and fair principles for global tax governance.
This framework aims to advance the drafting of a comprehensive, consistent, and integrated convention while addressing profit shifting and closing loopholes that allow multinational companies to avoid taxes.
Youssef emphasised the need to elevate the voices of developing countries in negotiations to address their challenges, such as resource mobilisation and debt sustainability. He also highlighted the importance of updating tax rules to better suit the digital economy.
