Egypt’s Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawy called on Chevron to fast-track development of key offshore gas fields and broaden collaboration on emissions reduction, reinforcing Cairo’s efforts to boost domestic output and advance its energy transition.
Badawy met Freeman Shaheen, head of Chevron’s global gas sector, on Wednesday on the sidelines of Gastech 2025 in Milan, where discussions focused on natural gas exploration and production in the Mediterranean, as well as reducing carbon emissions.
During the meeting, Badawy reviewed ongoing projects with Chevron, including the Nargis offshore and North Dabaa areas, and the recently added Lotus sector. He stressed the need to accelerate development of the Nargis field, commence drilling the Nargis-2 appraisal well, speed up exploratory drilling in North Dabaa, and expedite procedures for areas awarded to Chevron in the recent EGAS tender.
On emissions reduction, Badawy highlighted cooperation under a joint memorandum of understanding to enhance capacity building and share best practices, particularly in methane emissions management.
The minister also praised Chevron’s support in training and capacity building, underlining the company’s role as a strategic partner for Egypt’s petroleum sector, and noted that the partnership reinforces efforts to meet energy demand, increase domestic gas production, and achieve sustainable energy transition goals.
