Egypt, China’s CMEC sign MoU to study waste-to-energy project in Qalyubia
Egypt on Sunday signed a memorandum of understanding with China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) to study the development of an integrated waste-to-energy project in Qalyubia Governorate, the Environment Ministry said in a statement.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Local Development Minister Manal Awad, who is also acting environment minister, and Qalyubia Governor Ayman Atteya.
Under the study, CMEC will explore establishing a facility to process 1,200 tons per day of municipal solid waste and at least 200 tons of hazardous medical waste, along with a floating solar power plant. The project would be located at the City of Waste zone in 10th of Ramadan.
Awad said the plan aligns with Egypt’s strategy to modernise its waste-management infrastructure, including new transfer stations, recycling facilities, and efforts to expand waste sorting at source under the country’s Vision 2030 agenda. She said the project coincides with the closure of the Abu Zaabal dumpsite, with all waste treatment operations being shifted to the 10th of Ramadan site to ensure environmental safety.
Under the MoU, Qalyubia will provide data for environmental impact assessments, feasibility studies, and required regulatory approvals, while CMEC will be responsible for design, construction, and operation, including establishing a dedicated operating company once the facility is built.
Governor Atteya said the partnership marks a “qualitative leap” in the governorate’s waste-management plan and reflects Egypt’s broader push towards green and sustainable energy systems.
