Egypt conducts nearly 2.9m surgeries to end waiting lists

Egypt’s health ministry said on Saturday that almost 2.9 million surgeries have been performed since 2018 under President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s initiative to clear waiting lists for critical operations.

The programme has received more than 311,000 hotline calls, with about 277,000 cases tracked between July 2023 and September 2025, the ministry said in a statement.

Operations included cardiac, orthopaedic, oncology, ophthalmology, neurosurgery, kidney and liver transplants, cochlear implants and vascular procedures.

Patients are distributed among hospitals to secure faster treatment, with all surgeries offered free of charge, the statement added.
