Egypt confirms strong commodity reserves, expands supply chains to stabilise prices

Egypt said on Monday that its strategic reserves of key commodities remain at reassuring levels as the government expands supply chains to ensure price stability amid regional challenges.

Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly chaired a Cabinet meeting with ministers and officials from the supply, agriculture, and sustainable development sectors to review stock levels and distribution plans. He emphasised that maintaining large reserves of essential goods is a top government priority to meet citizens’ needs and support market stability.

Madbouly directed the expansion of retail and distribution networks, including the “Carry On” model, which aims to balance prices and prevent unjustified increases. He also confirmed that additional locations would be deployed across governorates and new cities to increase supply nationwide.

Supply Minister Sherif Farouk said that reserves of staples including wheat, rice, sugar, oil, pasta, and meat remain “very reassuring,” supported by proactive measures to ensure domestic consumption is fully covered.

Agriculture Minister Alaa Farouk highlighted initiatives to expand cultivated areas, adopt high-yield crops, and implement contract farming to secure strategic crops. He also noted the continued expansion of government outlets offering subsidized goods to help citizens manage the impact of regional pressures.

Bahaa El-Ghannam, Executive Director of the Future of Egypt Sustainable Development Authority, said the agency is boosting local production and expanding its Super Tawfeer retail network, which now operates 1,427 outlets, to enhance supply and stabilize markets. The authority is also increasing the use of refrigerated vehicles to distribute goods nationwide.

“The government remains committed to innovating mechanisms to regulate markets, ensure price stability, and meet citizens’ needs,” Madbouly said, underscoring the continuity of Egypt’s food security strategy under presidential directives.
