Egypt denies reports of scrapping Chinese EV charging protocol

Egypt’s Ministry of Industry denied reports on Monday that it had cancelled the “Chinese charging protocol” for electric vehicles, saying no such decision had been issued by any government body.

The ministry said the issue was raised during discussions with an EV company and later reviewed by a ministerial committee assessing the implications of importing cars with different charging standards, including European and Chinese. The talks aimed at shaping balanced policies to protect domestic industry, stabilise the market, and safeguard consumers.

It added that China remains a key strategic partner for Egypt in industry and transport, and bilateral ties would not be affected by “rumours or inaccurate reports.”

The ministry urged media outlets to rely only on official statements, while reaffirming Egypt’s commitment to industrial development, consumer protection and promoting electric vehicles as part of its sustainability agenda.
