Egypt drives digital innovation with expanded creativity centres
Egypt’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Amr Talaat outlined on Saturday the country’s strategy to enhance its digital economy through expanded infrastructure, innovation hubs, and startup support.
Boosting Digital Infrastructure
Minister Talaat emphasised efficient digital infrastructure, attractive investment frameworks, and partnerships with the private sector as key pillars of the strategy, aiming to empower citizens and cement Egypt’s regional leadership in technological innovation.
Creativity Centres across Egypt
The MCIT Ministry plans to expand Egypt Digital Creativity Centres to 27 by 2025, up from 23 in 2024 and just three in 2016. These hubs provide digital skills training, freelancing support, and innovation programmes in partnership with private firms. Selection criteria include central locations and proximity to universities.
Startup Support Initiatives
The ministry collaborates with global partners to back startups at all stages, offering consultancy and funding up to $600,000. Partnerships with Babson College, 500 Global, and Plug and Play support startups from inception to market expansion. Efforts also help startups grow internationally.
Innovation and Training
The centres feature government labs, electronics design spaces, and tailored training in modern technologies. They host 60 freelancers daily and 40 startups annually, with nine training labs, two electronics labs, and two incubators.
Impact and Leadership
Since their launch, the centres have trained over 100,000 individuals, supported 1,000 startups, and provided freelancing spaces for 20,000 people in 2024. Minister Talaat reaffirmed Egypt’s standing as a top-three regional leader in entrepreneurship and innovation.
