Egypt, EU boost energy ties to expand renewables, support power market reform

Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat held on Monday high-level talks with European Commission officials via video conference to advance cooperation in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and power sector reform.

The meeting focused on strengthening partnerships in solar and wind energy development, improving grid infrastructure, and aligning with Egypt’s national energy strategy, which aims to generate 42 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

“We are working closely with the European Commission to support Egypt’s energy mix plan and accelerate the expansion of renewables,” Minister Esmat said. He emphasised Egypt’s goal to become a regional energy hub linking Africa and Europe, leveraging its robust infrastructure and strategic location.

Discussions also addressed the ongoing liberalisation of Egypt’s electricity market, including the unbundling of the state-owned Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company and increased private sector participation. The two sides agreed on the need for technical coordination and a clear roadmap to guide future collaboration.

The European Commission reaffirmed its commitment to Egypt’s energy transition through green financing, grants, technical assistance, and pilot projects. Training, technology transfer, and investment expansion are also part of the broader cooperation agenda.

Minister Esmat praised the EU’s support and underlined the urgency of international cooperation in tackling climate change and securing energy supplies. “No country can meet the energy challenge alone,” he said, stressing the need for collective action to reduce emissions and build resilient, interconnected power systems.
