Egypt, EU discuss boosting green transition, climate cooperation

Egypt’s Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad met with Angelina Eichhorst, head of the European Union delegation to Egypt, to explore ways to deepen cooperation on green transition efforts, biodiversity protection, and climate adaptation, the Egyptian Cabinet said on Monday.

The two sides reviewed ongoing initiatives, including Egypt’s Industrial Pollution Control Programme and the forthcoming Green Sustainable Industry (GSI) project, which aims to strengthen environmental compliance across the country’s industrial sectors.

Minister Fouad also outlined Egypt’s efforts to reduce single-use plastics and its contributions to international negotiations on plastic pollution, particularly in support of developing nations.

The meeting addressed potential collaboration on the blue economy as Egypt prepares to host the Barcelona Convention on marine and coastal environment protection later this year.

The Egyptian minister proposed EU backing for a new Nature Fund aimed at attracting private investment in sustainable tourism and conservation. The initiative aligns with Egypt’s broader climate resilience strategy.

Eichhorst reaffirmed the EU’s support for Egypt’s environmental agenda and said the bloc is committed to advancing the strategic partnership on climate action and sustainability.
