Egypt, EU discuss boosting power grid, renewable energy projects

Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat met with the European Investment Bank (EIB) Vice-President Gelsomina Vigliotti and the European External Action Service (EEAS) Secretary-General Stefano Sannino to discuss strengthening cooperation in electricity and renewable energy sectors.

Talks focused on advancing joint projects in new and renewable energy, grid support, and battery-based energy storage. The discussions also addressed cross-border power interconnection, particularly with Europe via Italy and Greece.

The meeting reviewed current and future cooperation between Egypt, the EIB, and the European Union, aligned with Egypt’s strategy to upgrade its unified power grid, develop control centres, and expand solar, wind, and green hydrogen projects.

The two sides also explored enhancing storage capacity through integrated and standalone storage stations to maximise renewable output and improve grid stability.

Esmat highlighted Egypt’s recent legal reforms and investment incentives aimed at attracting more foreign investment into renewable energy as part of the country’s energy transition strategy, which seeks to reduce fuel consumption, cut carbon emissions, and boost the share of renewables in the national energy mix.
