Egypt’s Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly on Sunday met executives from China’s SunRev Solar to discuss plans to localise renewable energy component manufacturing, including a two-phase solar factory in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE).
The first phase, with investments of $100 million, is due to start production in the first quarter of 2026 and will produce 2 gigawatts (GW) of solar cells and 2 GW of modules, the Cabinet said. A second phase will expand output to add another 2 GW of modules and 2 GW of silicon wafers on a site of 100,000 square metres.
SunRev said production could be sold to the Egyptian government in local currency for state-led projects or channelled into power plants the company would build and operate, with electricity later sold to the state.
Electricity Minister Mahmoud Essmat said his ministry was open to component purchases and joint ventures in power generation. Madbouly asked the firm to submit detailed financial offers and instructed the ministry to explore land allocation for potential plants.
