Egypt eyes 3D printing to localise spare parts, cut imports

Egypt’s Minister of Public Enterprises Sector Mohamed Shimi and Chairman of the Arab Organisation for Industrialisation (AOI) Mokhtar Abdel Latif discussed boosting manufacturing capabilities and collaborating on 3D printing of spare parts.

These remarks came during a workshop on Manufacturing Spare Parts Using 3D Printing and Digital Machining held at the Digital Manufacturing Centre (DMC), as per a Cabinet statement.

Shimi stressed that adopting modern manufacturing technologies such as 3D printing is now essential to boost the competitiveness of Egyptian industry, reduce dependency on imports, and increase local employment. He praised AOI’s national role in supporting Egypt’s localisation and industrial modernisation strategies.

He also highlighted that the Ministry of Public Enterprises Sector is implementing a comprehensive plan to modernise its affiliated companies, focusing on digital transformation and technology localisation.

The minister noted the importance of intelligent manufacturing solutions and practical partnerships that enhance local value addition, especially in strategic industries, according to the statement.

Abdel Latif stated that AOI is collaborating with public and private sectors and research institutions to maximise DMC’s capabilities. It is working on sourcing spare parts and starting production using 3D printing and digital machining.

He reaffirmed AOI’s readiness to meet national demand for high-precision parts in line with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s directives to increase local manufacturing, localise technology, reduce imports, and promote the Made in Egypt brand.

He pointed out that 3D printing enables on-demand, customised production of otherwise unavailable or obsolete parts, with successful applications in sectors such as automotive, aerospace, industrial machinery, and medical equipment.
