Egypt is seeking to position itself as a regional hub for insurance in Africa, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan El-Khatib said on Thursday, following talks with executives from global insurer AXA.
Minister El-Khatib met with Hassan El-Shabrawishi, chairman of AXA Egypt, to explore investment opportunities in Egypt’s insurance sector and discuss ways to expand the country’s role in the African insurance landscape, according to a government statement.
“The government is prioritising the development of the insurance sector as a key pillar for enhancing the investment climate,” Minister El-Khatib said. He added that modern digital tools and stronger governance frameworks are critical to boosting service quality and attracting new investors.
Egypt aims to attract value-added investments that contribute to economic growth, the minister noted, adding that partnerships with international firms like AXA reflect growing investor confidence in Egypt’s market and its potential as a launchpad into Africa.
Minister El-Khatib emphasised the country’s readiness to support the creation of large-scale regional insurance entities, citing Egypt’s skilled workforce and infrastructure as strong foundations for growth.
El-Shabrawishi said AXA views Egypt as a strategic market in its global expansion plans, particularly across Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. The company has invested in healthcare through its One-Health clinic network and ranks among the top players in Egypt’s health and life insurance segments.
He reaffirmed AXA’s commitment to supporting Egypt’s efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure and expand insurance coverage.
The meeting comes as Egypt intensifies efforts to attract long-term investment across key sectors, including insurance, as part of its broader push to reinforce its economic resilience and regional influence.
