The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) is moving to speed up plans for a waste recycling plant as part of efforts to turn the vital trade artery into a “green canal,” Chairman Osama Rabie said Thursday.
The facility is tied to Antipollution Egypt, a joint venture with Greece’s Antipollution Group. Since launching in May, the company has serviced 2,516 ships and safely collected 6,600 cubic metres of waste, according to the authority.
Rabie said the project is central to Egypt’s strategy to align with International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) standards and strengthen the canal’s competitiveness. The expansion is expected to generate 500 direct and indirect jobs, with Egyptian workers already making up over 90 per cent of the staff.
Backers include Veron Vassiliadis, chairman of Greece’s V Group, and Greek-Egyptian businessman Eric Adam, who highlighted Egypt’s support for the project and its role in scaling up sustainable maritime services.
