Egypt forges stronger ties with ILO for employment, growth

Egypt’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Badr Abdel-Atty reiterated Egypt’s commitment to working closely with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to improve employment opportunities and create a conducive environment for investment, as per a Cabinet statement on Monday.

Minister Abdel-Atty made these remarks during a meeting with Gilbert Houngbo, director-general of the ILO, in Geneva. He highlighted the significant role played by the ILO’s Cairo office in implementing various projects and cooperation programmes.

The discussions also touched on Egypt’s efforts to achieve comprehensive development, enhance the investment climate, develop infrastructure, and build human capacity, the statement added.

The minister highlighted positive developments in Egypt’s labour environment, including establishing over 50 new workers’ unions last year and ongoing efforts to finalise the draft domestic labour law for parliamentary review.

He emphasised Egypt’s commitment to international labour standards, noting the recent ratification of the Maritime Labour Convention as a reflection of this commitment, the statement said.

Furthermore, he expressed Egypt’s eagerness to collaborate with the United Nations (UN) to leverage technical support in fulfilling the obligations outlined in the convention, according to the report.
