Egypt’s Minister of Health and Population, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar met on Tuesday with GE HealthCare’s President and CEO Elie Chaillot, discussing strategic plans to localise production and modernise the country’s healthcare sector.
The discussions, took place on the sidelines of Arab Health 2025 in the UAE, centered on the local manufacturing of radiopaque agents, essential for medical imaging techniques like MRI and X-rays, a crucial step towards self-sufficiency and reducing healthcare costs.
Both parties explored the potential for using GE’s innovations to support national health initiatives, including early cancer detection, cardiac care, and enhanced diagnostic services. Minister Abdel Ghaffar also expressed support for GE’s plan to produce ultrasound machines locally, which aligns with Egypt’s goal to increase local production of medical devices and expand exports.
In addition to local manufacturing, the meeting addressed the supply of one million vials of radiopaque agents, valued at $10 million, and the integration of AI in diagnostic imaging to boost efficiency and accuracy. They also discussed advancing healthcare worker training, telemedicine, and the deployment of mobile health units equipped with GE’s advanced technologies to conduct community-wide health screenings.
The discussion also covered upgrading infrastructure for MRI, CT scans, and X-ray facilities to further improve diagnostic capabilities and enhance healthcare quality across Egypt.
