Egypt hails US two-week military pause
Egypt on Wednesday welcomed US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a two-week suspension of military operations in the region, calling it a positive step towards de-escalation and a chance to revive diplomacy.
In a statement, the foreign ministry said the pause, coupled with what it described as a positive response from Iran, offered a critical opportunity to advance negotiations and avoid further escalation.
Egypt has long called for resolving disputes through peaceful means and warned against the use of force, the statement said, adding that renewed dialogue could help end the conflict, stabilise the region and prevent further suffering.
Cairo urged all parties to build on the move by committing fully to halting military activity and ensuring freedom of international navigation.
It also reaffirmed support for initiatives aimed at restoring peace and said it would continue working with regional and international partners, including Pakistan and Turkey, to bolster stability.
Egypt Stresses Sovereignty and Security of Gulf States, Jordan
Egypt stressed the need to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Gulf Arab states and Jordan, warning against any attacks or infringements on their security, which it said was closely tied to Egypt’s own.
In a phone call early on Wednesday, Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Atty expressed appreciation for the US decision in talks with Washington’s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, saying it could open the door to serious negotiations between the United States and Iran.
Witkoff, for his part, praised Egypt’s efforts with regional partners to push for a ceasefire and launch a diplomatic process, the statement said.
