Egypt hosts regional conference of EU refugee agency EASO

Ambassador Christian Berger, head of the European Union Delegation to Egypt, has opened on Monday the regional conference of the EU agency for refugees, the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) in Cairo.

During the EASO Regional Conference on International Protection and persons with specific protection needs in North Africa and Niger, Berger welcomed successful cooperation between EASO and Egypt, both bilaterally and in the region.

He encouraged Egypt and EASO to continue their approach of jointly designing roadmap activities to support and develop asylum-related capacities, according to the EU Delegation to Egypt’s statement.

The EU ambassador mentioned the EASO Regional Pilot Project for North Africa as a very good example of an EU Member States Team Europe approach.

The EU-Egypt high-level dialogue on migration, including asylum and protection matters, is planned to take place in Cairo in the coming weeks when European Commissioner Johansson and Senior Officials as well as the relevant EU agencies will visit Egypt, Berger added.

Established on 19 May 2010, EASO is a regulatory agency of the European Union.
