Egypt, India explore cooperation in renewable energy, smart grids, green hydrogen
Egypt’s Minister of Electricity Mahmoud Esmat met with India’s newly appointed ambassador to Cairo, Suresh K. Reddy on Wednesday to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation in renewable energy, smart grids, green hydrogen, and technology transfer.
The meeting focused on investment opportunities in Egypt’s electricity sector, with an emphasis on integrating advanced technologies, promoting innovation, and transitioning to a smart electricity network. Esmat highlighted Egypt’s national energy strategy, which aims for renewables to account for 42 per cent of electricity generation by 2030 and 65 per cent by 2040, and emphasised incentives for foreign companies, including those from India, to participate in energy projects.
Esmat also outlined plans to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, cut carbon emissions, and leverage digital technologies to enhance sustainability, while pointing to Egypt’s upgraded infrastructure and supportive legal framework for private and international investment.
Ambassador Reddy praised Egypt’s expertise in the electricity sector and underscored the importance of deepening cooperation, particularly in renewable energy. He highlighted Egypt’s strategic regional role and encouraged more Indian investment in the country’s energy market.
