Egypt invests EGP 7.6b to upgrade power infrastructure in ’24
The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) invested approximately EGP 7.6 billion in the 2023/2024 fiscal year to upgrade and renew substations and high-voltage and ultra-high-voltage lines, complete new lines and cables, expand and enhance regional control systems, and promote renewable energy projects, according to a Cabinet statement.
The total renewable energy capacity from wind, solar, and hydropower—operational, under construction, or pending contracts—has reached around 22.8 GW.
This includes battery storage projects to ensure the stability of the national electricity grid as part of Egypt’s strategy to achieve 42 per cent renewable energy share in its electricity mix by 2030.
Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Essmat emphasised that ensuring high-quality, reliable, and stable electricity supply is a key objective.
He highlighted that the transition to renewable energy and environmental sustainability is being implemented alongside a comprehensive plan to enhance grid efficiency, improve performance, and reduce fuel consumption.
Essmat also noted that the ministry is working to transform the grid into a smart network capable of handling significant renewable energy generation with maximum efficiency and minimal loss while optimising dollar expenditures.
