Egypt, Italy discuss energy, mining cooperation at Gastech

Egypt’s Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawy met Italy’s Environment and Energy Security Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin in Milan on Tuesday to discuss expanding cooperation in energy, mining and sustainability, the petroleum ministry said.

The talks took place on the sidelines of the Gastech 2025 exhibition and conference, one of the world’s largest energy gatherings.

Badawy stressed Egypt’s role as a regional energy hub and highlighted government efforts to attract foreign investment in energy and mining to support economic growth. He said renewable energy and diversification of supply are central to cooperation with Italy, which has invested in Egyptian wind and solar projects and is pursuing carbon neutrality.

Talks also covered potential collaboration in energy efficiency, green hydrogen production and trade, as well as investment opportunities for Italian firms in Egypt’s underdeveloped mining sector. Both ministers underscored that joint work would strengthen energy security and diversification across the Mediterranean.

Badawy invited Fratin to attend the Egypt Energy Show (EGYPES 2026) in Cairo as a platform to advance bilateral dialogue, the statement said.
