Egypt, Italy explore deeper healthcare cooperation – Cabinet

Egypt’s Minister of Health Khaled Abdel Ghaffar met with his Italian counterpart Orazio Schillaci in Rome to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation in key healthcare areas of mutual interest, the Cabinet said on Wednesday.

The discussions included collaboration with Italy’s San Donato Group hospital to exchange expertise and provide high-quality medical services. Plans were made to train Egyptian medical and nursing staff in Italy, focusing on specialities like burn treatment, transplants, and clinical research.

The ministers reviewed ongoing cooperation with Italian institutions, including the Gemelli IRCCS Centre for oncology and organ transplants, and the Bambino Gesù Hospital for paediatric oncology.

Talks also addressed partnerships in pharmaceutical manufacturing, export of medical products, and utilising Italian expertise in rare disease treatment — in coordination with Egypt’s Drug Authority (EDA).

The meeting followed up on progress since the two ministers’ last discussions in Geneva during the 78th UN General Assembly meetings, which covered cooperation in medical training, drug and device production, non-communicable diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and healthcare technology.
