Egypt links commercial, patent data to boost investor confidence, protect IP

Egypt on Thursday linked commercial registry data with patent and trademark records, a step the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade said aims to strengthen intellectual property protections and boost investor confidence in the country’s business environment.

The agreement, signed by the Internal Trade Development Authority (ITDA) and the Egyptian Patent Office and witnessed by Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Sherif Farouk, will allow authorities to cross-check company registrations, activity types, and addresses with patents, trademarks, and industrial designs. The ministry said the measure is expected to reduce IP infringements, streamline regulatory processes, and make it easier for businesses to navigate bureaucratic procedures.

The programme will operate through Egypt’s government digital data platform, overseen by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, marking a broader effort to create an integrated digital ecosystem among state agencies. By linking data across institutions, the government hopes to reinforce law enforcement in the marketplace while improving efficiency and transparency.

The move reflects Egypt’s growing emphasis on creating a business-friendly environment as the country seeks to attract both domestic and foreign investment, particularly in sectors reliant on technology and innovation.
