Egypt, MedBot in talks on robotic surgery training, 5G-enabled healthcare

Egypt’s Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar met officials from MedBot on Saturday to discuss establishing a regional training centre for robotic surgery and expanding cooperation on healthcare technologies, the ministry said.

The meeting, held during Huawei Connect 2025 in Shanghai, focused on localising robotic surgery in Egyptian hospitals and exploring opportunities for local assembly or manufacturing of components.

Plans include creating a training hub in Egypt to qualify surgeons and technicians on robotic systems in partnership with local universities and medical institutions. Both sides also discussed developing 5G-enabled remote surgery solutions to improve access in underserved areas by linking Egyptian university hospitals with international medical centres.

Talks covered joint research in oncology, hepatology, urology and orthopaedics, as well as Egypt’s potential role as a hub for robotic surgery, training, and regional distribution of MedBot products.

Integrating robotic systems into Egypt’s universal health insurance and national programmes, such as reducing surgical waiting lists, was also discussed, alongside establishing a technical support centre and training biomedical engineers to sustain operations.
