Egypt merges local development, environment ministries to boost policy implementation – PM

Egypt’s government has merged the Local Development and Environment ministries to strengthen enforcement of environmental policies and integrate sustainability into local projects, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly said in a press briefing on Thursday.

Madbouly emphasised that the consolidation does not reduce the Environment Ministry’s role at a time when environmental protection is a global priority. “The ministry’s core functions have always been the Environmental Affairs Agency, Solid Waste Management Authority, and oversight of natural reserves,” he said.

He added that much of the responsibility for enforcement historically fell on governorates, which often led to delays or inconsistent application of environmental regulations. “By placing these portfolios under a single minister, we can ensure better coordination, faster implementation of recommendations, and the integration of sustainability into all local projects,” Madbouly said.

He added that the move aligns with broader government efforts to streamline public administration, enhance accountability, and improve the efficiency of development and environmental initiatives nationwide, while maintaining a focus on sustainable growth.
