Egypt monitors airport operations amid regional airspace closures

Egypt is maintaining smooth airport operations amid recent disruptions and rapidly evolving developments that led to the closure of neighbouring countries’ airspace.

Minister of Civil Aviation Sameh El-Hefny inspected the Operations Room and Crisis Management Department at Cairo International Airport to review flight operations and ensure they run according to approved plans.

The ministry continues intensive coordination with civil aviation authorities of affected countries, following approved procedures to ensure aviation safety, in cooperation with the ICAO Regional Office.

On Saturday, 28 February, Cairo International Airport had 116 planned flights to Arab Gulf destinations, of which 69 operated and 47 were cancelled. The airport also received 12 diverted international flights, while other Egyptian airports – Sphinx, Alexandria, Hurghada, Sharm El-Sheikh, and Luxor – received 10 diverted flights due to neighbouring airspace closures.

El-Hefny directed full logistical support and dedicated teams to maintain services without affecting the regular schedule, ensuring safety and passenger comfort. The ministry affirmed it is taking all measures to monitor developments in real time and uphold the highest aviation safety standards.
