Egypt moves to localise automotive sheet metal industry

Egypt’s Ministry of Industry and Transport is developing a comprehensive strategy to localise automotive sheet metal production, as part of the state’s broader efforts to strengthen local manufacturing and supply chain integration, Minister Kamel El-Wazir said on Monday.

The statement came during an expanded meeting chaired by El-Wazir with leading steel manufacturers and representatives from the automotive and bus manufacturing sectors, as per a Cabinet statement.

The meeting aimed to explore practical mechanisms to advance Egypt’s capacity in automotive sheet metal production, a sector the minister described as a national priority, the announcement added.

El-Wazir highlighted that the localisation strategy focuses on sustainability in legislation, incentives, and implementation frameworks.

The localisation of automotive sheet metal is a real entry point to expanding domestic manufacturing of vehicle components and fostering new industrial partnerships that align with Egypt’s development goals, the minister said.

He added that Egypt already exports several car components, a testament to the competitiveness of national industry. This, he said, opens promising opportunities for the localisation of key inputs such as tyres, glass, and automotive sheet metal.
