Egypt outlines health roadmap for Africa – RESCO

Egypt’s Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar stressed that Africa’s healthcare future must be rooted in the continent’s priorities and realities, according to a Cabinet statement on Tuesday.

During the Regional Steering Committee (RESCO) meeting hosted in Cairo, Abdel Ghaffar reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to transforming RESCO’s recommendations into tangible outcomes that elevate public health across Africa.

The minister highlighted the in-depth discussions held during the sessions, which focused on equitable, sustainable healthcare investment and regional collaboration. These exchanges, he noted, deepened understanding of Africa’s health needs and outlined practical steps forward.

Three strategic pillars were identified as a roadmap for future action:

  • Boosting domestic health financing by placing healthcare at the centre of national policies, developing fair insurance systems, and creating innovative, equitable funding mechanisms.
  • Strengthening local pharmaceutical and medical supply manufacturing to improve access to care, enhance economic resilience, and build self-reliance during health crises.
  • Accelerating digital transformation in healthcare, through investments in infrastructure such as electronic records, surveillance platforms, and integrated systems—areas where Egypt has made notable progress and stands ready to support regional integration.

Abdel Ghaffar called for enhanced coordination through regional technical and steering committees, underlining their vital role in supporting both political and technical leadership.
