Egypt will establish a new biogas plant in Beni Suef Governorate to convert agricultural and animal waste into renewable energy, the Cabinet said on Sunday, as part of efforts to expand the country’s clean energy portfolio.
The project is being developed in cooperation with the environment ministry’s Biogas Energy Foundation for Sustainable Development, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and Italy’s Eni. It will have a capacity of 5,000 cubic metres of biogas per day, processing around 134 tonnes of animal waste daily, the statement said.
The announcement followed a meeting between Local Development and Acting Environment Minister Manal Awad and Agriculture Minister Alaa Farouk to discuss expanding the use of biogas and organic fertiliser production nationwide.
Egypt has been promoting biogas technology to reduce emissions, ensure the safe disposal of organic waste, and generate clean energy. The Biogas Energy Foundation has so far built 2,000 units across 19 governorates, producing 2.15 million cubic metres of gas annually — equivalent to about 86,000 LPG cylinders — and turning 53,800 tons of animal waste into 50,000 tons of organic fertiliser, the Cabinet said.
